Krieglach was first mentioned in a document of 1148. Today it is known first of all for being the birthplace of Peter Rosegger (1843–1918). He was probably the most important author of Styria and also introduced the Styrian dialect in his writings. In Alpl, in the vicinity of Krieglach, the home of his parents and the school which he suggested to build have been transformed into museums. Rosegger is buried on the old cemetry of Krieglach.
The parish church Sankt Jakobus der ältere
(St. James the Greater) dates from the 14th century. The interior
is decorated in Rococo style. The vestry contains a fresco of around 1420 depicting the Last Judgement.
