Gosau is situated at an elevation of 767 m at the foot of the mountain crest Gosaukamm (in the background Großer Donnerkogel, 2053 m). It is a well-known resort for summer and winter tourism. Gosau was the first community that openly adopted the Protestant faith after the Edict of Tolerance of Emperor Joseph II in 1781.
A popular place for hiking excursions in the area are the Gosau Lakes further south above Gosau.
