Niechorze is situated on the Baltic Sea coast, about 4 km east of Rewal in the Gryfice district of West Pomerania. The village has a population of about 830 and is part of the municipality of Rewal.
During the Middle Ages the village was in possession of the bishops of Cammin (Kamień Pomorski). The village later consisted of two parts. The southern part (Groß Horst) was a rural community while the northern part (Klein Horst) was a fishing village and later became much larger than its rural counterpart. Since 1860 the village was known as a seaside resort.
The Lighthouse of Niechorze was built in 1863–1866 because the increasing
shipping traffic off the West Pomeranian coast required a new navigational light between the lighthouses at
Świnoujście in the west and Kołobrzeg.
The lighthouse has a height of 45 m and is located on top of a cliff 22 m above the sea.
The beacon has a range of 20 nautic miles (about 37 km).
In 1945 its lights were destroyed by artillery fire. In 1948 the lighthouse was restored using the original design,
and a new optical and light system, which is powered by an old submarine engine, were installed.
