Międzyzdroje is the best-known Polish sea-side resort on the Baltic Sea coast of the island of Wolin, located between the Baltic Sea and the Lagoon of Szczecin.
The history of Międzyzdroje (German: Misdroy) goes back to the 13th century. In 1554 it was mentioned as a property of the chapter of the cathedral of Cammin (today Kamień Pomorski). For most of its history, Międzyzdroje was a small fishing village. Between 1830 and 1835 Międzyzdroje began to become a sea-side resort. In 1850 Międzyzdroje counted 317 inhabitants and 500 bathers. After 1860 the place grew rapidly. A boost for the popularity of the place was a visit in 1867 by the German Crown Prince Friedrich, the later Emperor Friedrich III. From 1869 ships regularly served the line Szczecin (Stettin) – Międzyzdroje (Misdroy) – Świnoujście (Swinemünde). After 1872, Misdroy was one of the leading sea-side resorts of the German empire. The construction in 1899 of the railway line from Międzyzdroje to Wolin and thus its connection to the railroad from Berlin, further augmented the resorts popularity. In 1945 Misdroy became part of Poland and was renamed Międzyzdroje. Since 1947 Międzyzdroje has the status of a town. Between 1973 and 1984 it was part of the municipality of Świnoujście.
