Immenstadt im Allgäu (official name Immenstadt i. Allgäu) is situated at an elevation of 728 m at the river Konstanzer Ach and the eastern bank of the lake Alpsee in southwest Bavaria. Immenstadt has a population of about 14,300 (2005).
Imendorf was first mentioned in a document of 1275. In 1360 the count of Montfort granted Immendorff
the status and privileges of a town. Due to its location of the major salt trading route from
Hall in Tirol to Lake Constance the town soon prospered. The town remained in possession of the
counts of Montfort until 1567 when it was sold to the barons (1629 counts) of Königsegg-Aulendorf. In 1796 Immenstadt
was occupied by French troops and in 1804 the town became Austrian before it became part of Bavaria in 1806.
