The spa town Lázně Kynžvart is situated at an elevation of 723 m in western Bohemia. The village began to develop below the border fortress Kunigeswart which was rebuilt prior to 1400. Kynžvartobtained the status of a market town in 1448. The mineral springs mentioned for the first time already in 1564. The bath houses [left] were erected in the 19th century. The iron-containing waters are used for the treatment of rheumatic, gynecological and neurological diseases.
Prince Clemens Wenzel METTERNICH (1773–1859), State Chancellor of the
Austrian Monarchy between 1821 and 1848, had a residence in Lázně Kynžvart. Guests in his residence were, among others, the famous
poets Johann Wolfgang von GOETHE (1749–1832) and Adalbert STIFTER (1805–1868).
One of the major works of Stifter, the narrative story Der Nachsommer (Late Summer),
was strongly influenced by impressions which he got here. The literary bequest of the
French poet Alexandre DUMAS (père; 1802–1870) is guarded in the collection of the castle.
