Falkenstein is situated at an elevation of 525 m in the Vogtland region of southwestern Saxony. Falkenstein has a population of about 9,400 (2005).
The origins of Falkenstein probably go back to around 1200. The eariest written mention of Valkinstein is found in a document from 1362. The village was chartered as a town in 1448. After that, it became a mining town, the only one in the Vogtland region to obtain the status of a 'Free Mining Town'. After the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648), the town became a centre of clothmaking in Saxony. The entire old town was destroyed by a large fire in 1859 and it was rebuilt on a regular ground plan after that. After the connection of the town to the railroad system (1875 to Zwickau, 1892 to Muldenberg), Falkenstein also became an important railroad and traffic junction.
The Town Hall [left] with its Art Nouveau details and the characteristic tower (42 m high) was built in 1901–1903.
Falkenstein is also the name of a castle in Ballenstedt, Saxony-Anhalt.
