Sankt Moritz in Upper Engadin district of the Swiss canton Graubünden is one of the best-known spa places and winter resorts of the Alps. The municipality consists of St. Moritz-Dorf (elevation 1,822 m), St. Moritz-Bad (elevation 1,773 m) and one half of Champfèr (elevation 1,825 m) (the other half is part of the municipality of Silvaplana). Although the town has the appearance of a large alpine town, its permanent residential population is only about 5,000.
It is believed that the saline springs may already have been known in the Bronze age. The first hotel, however, was only opened in 1859, but this initiated the rise of the town to an immense popularity. The tradition of St. Moritz as a winter resort began in 1865. Twice in its history St. Moritz was the site of Olympic Games: in 1928 and 1948. The Alpine Ski World Championships took place here in 1934, 1974 und 2003.
The St. Moritzersee (Romansh: Lai da San Murezzan) [background] is the northeasternmost and smallest of the
there lakes of the Engadin lake plateau. The mineral springs of St. Moritz-Bad are located at its western end.
A popular tourist attraction are the horse races ("White Turf") that take place on the frozen lake in February.
