Vyhne is situated at an elevation of 350 m about 18 km southwest of the district town Žiar nad Hronom in the Banská Bystrica region of central Slovakia.
Vyhine was already mentioned in 1326, later versions of the name include Vyhinie, Wyhne (1426), Wichnorany (1773), and Wyhňany (1808). The Hungarian versions of the name include Vichnye, Vihnyepeszerény, and finally, until 1918, Vihnye. In German the town was also known as Eisenbad or, rarely, Eisenbach. After the break-up of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in 1918 it was named Vyhne and, in 1920, Vihňorany, from 1927 onwards Vyhne again.
The village originally had been founded as a mining settlement near the old gold and silver mines of the Stiavnica mountains. The thermal springs of Vyhne had been in use since the 15th century. The development of Vyhne as a spa town began in the 18th century. The brewery of Vyhne (Pivovar Steiger), established as early as 1473, is the oldest of Slovakia.
