Schönau im Schwarzwald

ru: Шёнау (Шварцвальд)

1938 Schönau im Schwarzwald Schönau im Schwarzwald is situated at an elevation of 542–600 m in the upper valley of the Große Wiese river, surrounded by the mountains of the southern Schwarzwalf (Black Forest) region of Baden-Württemberg. Due to its pleasant climate, Schönau is a popular resort town. Since 1971 Schönau is the seat of the common administration of the administrative union of the municipalities of Aitern, Böllen, Fröhnd, Schönau, Schönenberg, Tunau, Utzenfeld, Wembach and Wieden.

The Catholic church Mariä Himmelfahrt (Assumption of Our Lady) [background right, barely visible] was built in Neo-Gothic style between 1904 and 1907. It is already the fourth church in this place. The first church had been built in 1158–1164. The lower parts of the church tower could had already been part of that church. The second church was erected in 1341 and was replaced by a Baroque church in 1727 which was demolished in 1902 to make way for the present edifice. The tower was heightened and now has a height of 90 m. Parts of the interior decorations still date from the Middle Ages: the wood-carved winged high altar was created in 1520/1530.

The structure shown in the foreground of the picture on glass no. 1938 is a monument for Albert Leo Schlageter (1894–1923). Schlageter was born in Schönau and was a soldier in World War I during which he climbed to the rank of lieutenant. After the war he fought in the 'Freikorps' (Free Corps) in the Baltic area and in Upper Silesia. Since 1922 he was a member of the NSDAP. During the occupation of the Ruhr area by Belgian and French troops in 1923 he led sabotage activities against the French troops. After his capture he was sentenced to death by a French court-martial. After his death he was idolised by the Nazis as a German national hero. The monument in Schönau was erected in 1926. In 1937 it was demolished to make way for a larger structure which, however, was never completed due to the outbreak of World War II. The ruins of the monument are still visible today.
