Karlovice is situated at an elevation of 478 m on the river Opava in the district Bruntál of the Moravian Silesia region of the Czech Republic.
The village began to develop in the 13th century below a castle.
The old name Hütten, which was first mentioned in 1558, demonstrates that iron mining was important already at that time
(the German word 'Hütte' means 'iron mill'). The community of Karlsthal (Karlovice) arose around 1720.
In the late 19th and early 20th century
Karlovice was best known as a summer resort and climatic spa. It was probably the most popular summer resort
in Austrian Silesia at that time.
