The small holiday resort Sankt Kathrein am Hauenstein is situated at an elevation of 820 m
at the stream Hirschbach within the range of the Fischbacher Alpen, about 31 north-northeast of the district town
Weiz and about 51 km northeast of Graz, the capital of Austria's
state of Styria. The municipality has a population of about 600 (2026).
The 
parish church Sankt Katharina [background centre]
on a hill above the village was first mentioned in 1383 and became a parish in 1788.
The church dates from the early Gothic period and was enlarged in 1712.
After a fire in 1904, the nave and tower were reconstructed. Restaurations took place in 1968 and 1972.
