The small holiday resort Sankt Kathrein am Hauenstein is situated at an elevation of 820 m at the stream Hirschbach within the range of the Fischbacher Alpen.
The parish church Sankt Katharina [background centre]
on a hill above the village was first mentioned in 1295 and became a parish in 1640.
The church dates from the early Gothic period and was enlarged in 1742 in late Baroque style.
Since then the church is oriented towards the north; the chancel of the old church
now serves as a side chapel on the eastern wall of the nave.
