Butzbach

ru: Буцбах

1848 Butzbach Butzbach is situated at an elevation of 169 m between the Taunus low mountains and the Wetterau region in Germany's federal state of Hesse.

During the 1st century AD, a site near the present town centre was the location of one of the most important Roman forts in the Wetterau region, which existed until about the 3rd century. The earliest written mention of Butzbach dates from 773. Butzbach was chartered as a town in 1321 when it was in possession of the counts of Falkenstein (now part of Königstein im Taunus). During the following centuries, the town was in possession of the counts of Eppstein, Solms-Braunfels, Solms-Lich, Katzenelnbogen, and finally the landgraves of Hesse-Darmstadt. Between 1609 and 1643 Butzbach was the residence of the collateral line Hesse-Darmstadt-Butzbach. After the death of the only landgrave of this line, Philipp III, Butzbach returned to Hesse-Darmstadt. Until 1709 the Renaissance castle was mostly used as a dowager seat for the landgravines. In 1818 Butzbach became a garrison town and the castle was converted into military barracks. After 1935 the German Wehrmacht used the castle. After World War II units of the American forces were stationed here from 1950 until 1991.
