Skodborg is situated at an elevation of 45 m in the north of the county of South Jutland (Sønderjyllands Amt). In 1970 the former parishes of Hjerting, Jels, Lintrup, Rødding, Skodborg, Skrave, Sønder Hygum and Øster were merged into the municipality Rødding. On the 1st of January, 2007, the municipalities Rødding, Brørup, Holsted and Vejen were merged to form the new municipality of Vejen. Skodborg has a population of about 1,850 (2007), the entire Vejen municipality has a population of about 41,900 (2007).
The Duchy of Schleswig had been a fief of the Danish Crown until 1864, from 1460 in personal union
with Denmark. In 1864, after the Second War of Schleswig, it was annexed to Prussia. After World War II North Schleswig
(in Denmark Sønderjylland, South Jutland) was ceded to Denmark in 1920, whereas South Schleswig voted for staying with
Germany as part of the state of Schleswig-Holstein. After 1920 Sønderjylland was administratively divided into the
three counties (Danish: amter) Aabenraa (since 1948 officially spelled Åbenrå, German:
Apenrade), Haderslev (German: Hadersleben) and Tønder (German: Tondern, Frisian: Toner). In 1970 the three counties
were merged to form the new county of South Jutland (Sønderjyllands Amt). The Danish name Nordslesvig (North Schleswig)
almost never is used in Denmark, except by the ethnic German minority of the region. In contrast, Sydslesvig (South Schleswig)
is frequently used and refers to the northern part of the German state of Schleswig-Holstein, which is also home to an
ethnic Danish minority. On the 1st of January, 2006, the amter Sønderjylland, Funen and Ribe, and ten municipalities
of the amt Velje were merged into the new region South Denmark.
