Sieding is situated at an elevation of 449 m in the valley of the Sierning stream of southern Lower Austria. In 1969 Sieding became part of the municipality of Ternitz.
Stixenstein castle [background] is situated at an elevation of 514 m on a promontory above the
Sierning valley. The castle goes back to the 12th century. It was the ancestral seat of the Stuchse (Stüchse) family (ministers to the
sovereigns). The castle was rebuilt after a fire in 1347 and since 1350 was administered by Austrian sovereigns (the Habsburgs). The Stuchse family
became extinct in 1426. Since 1547 the castle was owned by the Counts Hoyos who expanded the castle in 1549. Large parts of the castle were destroyed
by fires 1735 and 1803. A partial restoration took place in 1832. The city of Vienna bought the castle in 1937. Since 1996
the castle is being adapted for public use.
