Rohrau

1720 Rohrau The origins of Rohrau go back to a small castle which in 1382 came in possession of the Counts of Württemberg. Over the years Rohrau developed into a small rural community. Until about 1950 about 90% of the population lived on agriculture. In 1971 Rohrau was incorporated into the municipality of Gärtringen.

The Protestant parish church [bottom right] of (Gärtringen-)Rohrau was built in 1700. In 1975 the old church was demolished while a new, modern church was built at a new location.

The bottom left picture on glass no. 1720 shows a building labeled "Spezereihandlung v[on] Ernst Scharpf Wien" (delicatessen shop of Ernst Scharf Vienna[?]). The last word is not really legible. There is a place in Lower Austria near Vienna named Rohrau, famous as the birth place of the composers Joseph Haydn (1732–1809) and his brother Michael Haydn (1737–1806). It is however unlikely that the glass is from that place since the church depicted on the bottom right picture of the glass (see below) is too different.
