Počátky is located about 26 km south of the district town Pelhřimov in the Vysočina (Jihlava) region of the Czech Republic. The municipality has a population of about 2,500 (2023).
The place originated in the second half of the 13th century. The earliest known written document referring to this place dates from 1289. In 1389 it was mentioned as a town for the first time. The privilege to fortify the town was granted in 1439. From 1850 until 1945 it was the seat of a district court.
The church of St. John the Baptist [left, no. 4454: background left] was first mentioned in 1354. The Gothic church was rebuilt in Baroque style in 1688–1690.
