Smolník is situated at an elevation of 561 m in the valley of the Smolník stream in the northeastern part of the
Slovenské Rudohorie (Slovak Ore Mountains) region. It was first mentioned in a document of 1327 as Semelnech.
The first settlers of the old mining village in the 13th century were Germans from Gelnica (Göllnitz).
Smolník received the status of a free mining town in 1327.
