Altenmünster is situated at an elevation of 487 m on the river Zusam in the administrative region Schwaben (Swabia) of Bavaria.
The village came in possession of the monastery of Ellwangen in the 2nd half of the 9th century. In 1262 it passed on to
the monastery of Oberschönfeld and remained in its possession until the secularisation of 1803. From then on it was a municipality
within the Electorate (1806 Kingdom) of Bavaria. The oldest known name of the village was Munsterum. Throughout the centuries
the name appears in many variants. The name Altenmünster appeared much later and meant to distinguish it from Neumünster,
which today is one of the 13th villages that are the constituents of the municipality of Altenmünster.
