Boizenburg / Elbe

ru: Бойценбург (Эльба)

1456 Boizenburg / Elbe Boizenburg is situated at an elevation of 6 m on the river Elbe in Germany's state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Around AD 600 the area was colonised by the Slavic Polabes who were replaced by Germanic tribes in the mid 13th century. The place was first mentioned in a document of 1158. In 1267 Boizenburg received a town charter similar to that of Lübeck. During the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648) the town was occupied and looted several times by Danish, Imperial, and Swedish troops. A large fire destroyed the town in 1709. The modern development of Boizenburg began in the 19th century, especially after 1846 when the town was connected to the railroad line between Hamburg and Berlin.

The historical town hall [top] was built in 1712 in Baroque style in place of the earlier town hall that had been consumed by the fire of 1709. After a thorough renovation in 1994–1996 it is again the seat of the city administration.

The lower left picture on glass no. 1456 shows the Staatsbahnhof (state railway station) from the second half of the 19th century.
