Breitenstein is situated at an elevation of 450–500 m on a plateau of the Unterharz region. A document of 1264 mentioned for the first time the 'broad stone' next to the linden tree at this place, which was sign of a place where justice was administered. Breitenstein today is part of the municipality of Südharz, formed in 2010 by a merger of the former municipalities of Bennungen, Breitenstein, Breitungen, Dietersdorf, Drebsdorf, Hainrode, Hayn, Kleinleinungen, Questenberg, Roßla, Rottleberode, Schwenda, Stolberg (Harz), Uftrungen and Wickerode.
