Sebnitz is situated at an elevation of 365 m in the nature reserve region Sächsische Schweiz of southeastern Saxony. The town was founded in the second half of the 12th century and was first mentioned in a document of 1241. In 1451 it came into possession of the Electors of Saxony. Before that, it had belonged to the Kingdom of Bohemia. Sebnitz is well-known as the town of flower-makers. The craftsmanship of flower-making had been introduced to Sebnitz in 1834. Around 1900, the industry had employed some 15,000 people.
