Furtwangen im Schwarzwald, situated at an elevation of 850–1150 m in the upper valley of the river Breg in the central
Schwarzwald moutain region, is Baden-Württemberg's highest town. Furtwangen was first mentioned in a papal document of 1179.
In 1350, Furtwangen was acquired by Austria and remained part of the Austrian possessions until 1806 when it became part of the
Grand Duchy of Baden. It obtained the status of a market town in 1747 and that of a town in 1873.
Since the 17th century, clocks were produced in Furtwangen. The industrialisation during the 19th century made clock-making the
most important economic factor of the town. The clock-maker school, founded in 1850, in the meantime has evolved into a university for applied sciences.
