Marienweiher is situated at an elevation of 525 m in the heart of the Frankenwald region of Upper Frankonia in the North of Germany's state of Bavaria. Marienweiher is one of the oldest pilgrimage places of Germany. The Franciscan monatery was founded in 1646 as a hospital and became a convent in 1699. In 1802, the monastery became used for civil purposes although the convent was not formally closed. The monastery was reopened in 1828. Today, the village of Marienweiher is part of the municipality of Marktleugast.
The pilgrimage church Mariä Heimsuchung (Visitation of the Virgin Mary) [centre]
was built in 1718–1720. The church tower was completed in 1743–1745.
