1240 Moringen Moringen is situated at an elevation of 170 m in the Northeim district of southern Lower Saxony. Moringen was first mentioned in a document of AD 983 and obtained the status of a town prior to 1350. The original town suffered heavy damages during the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648) and was finally destroyed by a large fire in 1734. Soon after that the town was rebuilt. Throughout the following centuries Moringen was a small rural town. During the Nazi era Moringen was the site of three concentration camps: the camp for male prisoners operated only in 1933, the camp for female prisoners operated from 1933 until 1938, the camp for juvenile prisoners existed from 1940 until 1945. In 1989 the organisation 'Lagergemeinschaft and Gedenkstätte KZ Moringen e.V.' (Camp Community and Memorial Concentration Camp Moringen) was founded. With the help of sponsors the former gate house of the camp was converted to a memorial place which was opened in 1993.

The Stennebergsmühle [left] was built in 1683 as an oil mill and was expanded to a mill for flour and grits in 1695. The service as a mill ended in 1907. Since then it operates as a country inn.
