Issum is situated at an elevation of 25 m in the Kleve district of northwestern North Rhine-Westfalia. The village was first mentioned in
a document of 1338. Originally the estates were owned by the counts of Geldern but the ownership changed frequently throughout the following centuries.
The independent municipality of Issum was created in 1912. The village of Sevelen, first mentioned around 1440, was merged with
Issum in 1969.
