Helbra is situated at an elevation of 222 m in the Mansfelder Land region in the eastern foothills of the Harz mountains. The earliest mention in a document dates from 1155. The deposits of copper slate that were found in the area were exploited thoughout many centuries. Modern technologies introduced in 1880 boosted the mining activities. However, the mines and copper works were closed in 1990.
The lake Bad Anna [left] was created from an old open cast coal mining pit.
