Fulnek is situated at an elevation of 322 m at the historical border between the former margraviate of Moravia and the duchy of (Austrian) Silesia. Fulnek was first mentioned in 1293.
The castle [top] above the town goes back to a Gothic castle of the 13th century which was rebuilt in the 17th century. It obtained its present appearance when it was rebuilt anew after a large fire in 1810.
The Renaissance houses and Baroque façades of Fulnek's central square, náměstí J. A. Komenského [bottom], suffered heavy damage in 1945 and were restored after World War II. The square is named after the theologian and educator Jan Amos Komenský (Johann Amos Comenius), who lived in Fulnek from 1618 until 1621.
