Louny is situated at an elevation of 228 m on the river Ohře (German: Eger) in the Ústecky region of the Czech Republic. The place was first mentioned in a document of 1115 and received the formal status of a town in 1260.
The church of St. Nicholas (kostel sv. Mikuláše) [centre] was built after a large fire in 1517 had destroyed
most of the old town. 1517. The church, completed prior to 1540, is one of the finest examples of Late Gothic architecture in Europe and is a masterpiece of
the architect Benedikt Ried (B. Rieth, Beneš z Loun).
