Tabarz is situated at an elevation of 420 m at the foot of the Iselberg (916 m) mountain on the river Laucha in the Thüringer Wald region of western Thuringia in the district Gotha.
The first mentioning of Tabarz (as Tanfurt) dates back to 1109, the village of Cabarz was first mentioned in 1378 (Keywers) and 1379 (Kauwirs). The municipality of Tabarz was formed in 1946 by merging the villages of Tabarz and Cabarz. The tradition of Tabarz as a spa place began in the late 19th century. Until 2017 the official name of the municipality was Tabarz / Thür. Wald; on 9 March of that year the name was changed to Bad Tabarz, recognising it officially as a spa town.
