The Hornisgrinde (1,164 m; 3,819 ft) is the highest mountain of the northern Schwarzwald (Black Forest) region. The name appeared first in a document of 1291 (mons Grinto).
The hut and the tower of the Schwarzwaldverein [left and right; barely visible on the picture] were built in 1910. The tower originally was used as a lookout tower for tourists
but later was fitted with several transmitting aerials.
The modern radio tower (206 m) of the South-West German broadcasting corporation was built in 1970–1974.
