Okres: Praha-východ | district: Prague-East |
Zápy is situated at an elevation of 201 m just south of the river Labe (Elbe) in the north of the Central Bohemia
region of Czechia, about 2 km southeast of the neighbouring city of Brandýs nad Labem-Stará
Boleslav and about 20 km northeast of the city centre of Prague. As of 2024, the municipality has
a population of 924.
The first written mention dates back to 1052. In 1950, the present municipality of Zápy was formed by a merger of the previously independent municipalities of Ostrov, Stránka and Zápy, which today each form one of the three cadastral districts of Zápy. In 2006, Zápy obtained the official status of městys (township).
In the proximity of the confluence of the rivers Labe (Elbe) and Jizera (Iser) three spas operated in the past: Lázně Toušeň, Houšťka and Ostrov, of which today only Lázně Toušeň operates as a spa place. The history of Orstrov as a spa goes back to 1830 when, during the search for iron ore, a spring of yellowish, 'smelly' waters was discovered. The place was developed into a spa resort shortly after the middle of the 19th century. A building with seven spa cabins, eight bathtubs and nineteen rooms for guest accomodation was built in 1864. Analyses showed that the waters contained high concentrations of iron and sulfur, and thus the waters were used mainly to treat patients suffering from rheumatism, female diseases, anemia, leprosy, ringworm, gout, skin and nervous diseases.
Ostrov, in the Czech language literally meaning 'island', is a very common place name in Czechia. In this collection,
another glass shows a view from Ostrov in northwestern Bohemia.
