Uhlířský vrch

de: Köhlerberg

0000 Uhlířský vrch The Uhlířský vrch (German: Köhlerberg) is a low mountain (altitude 672 m) located within the municipality of Bruntál, about 3 km southwest of the town centre and about 62 km norhwest of the regional capital, Ostrava.

The mountain is one of the youngest extinct volcanoes in the Czech Republic. On the southern slope it is composed predominantly from sandy tuffs with larger volcaniv bombs. There is an abandoned quarry from a former tuff quarry, which was declared a natural monument in 1966. The predominant direction of the lava flows was north and northeast, so that there the mountain is made predominantly of basalt. The path to the top of the hill is lined with a four-row lime tree alley. The alley was planted in 1766–1770. In 1973, the trees of the alley were declared memorable, and 20 years later, the entire area, including the lime tree alley, became a cultural monument.

The pilgrimage church of our Lady of Help [left, no. 0000] was originally built in 1653 as a wooden chapel on the top of the mountain as a far-visible symbol of the victory of the Catholic Counterreformation. This original chapel was replaced in 1755–1765 by a single-naved Baroque church designed by the Krnov architect Jiří Friedrich Gans. The church holds a copy of the venerated image of Our Lady of Help, painted by Lucas Cranach the Elder, the original of which is in the cathedral of Innsbruck.
