Hedemora is situated at an elevation of 100 m in the southeast of Sweden's Dalarna county. Hedemora is the central town
of the municipality of the same name. The town of Hedemora has a population of about 7,500 (2023), the municipality has a population
of about 15,00 (2025).
In the Middle Ages, the site where Hedemora stands today was known as Henemora and lay on a trade route from central Sweden to
Kopparberget (now Falun). For this reason, Hedemora was granted market privileges as early as 1446 and eventually town rights in 1459.
The town is therefore the oldest in Dalarna. Gustav Vasa (Gustav I) set up his first mint in the city in 1521, but it was only
operational until 1524. The coins from this mint are called Dalsklippings. Hedemora was the collection point for the pole iron that was
going to Stockholm; however, this right was passed to Västerås in 1628. In the late 1600, the hammer
works of Hedemora were closed, which was a severe blow to its economy. A renewed expansion began in the early 20th century as a
result of new industries and the population doubled between 1900 and 1930.
