Engelsberg is situated at an elevation of 517 m in the very north of the district Traunstein,
about 29 km north-northwest of hte district town Traunstein and about 72 km east of the Bavarian
capital, Munich. Te municipality has a population of about 2,500 (2024).
The oldest known written document that mentions Engilmuntesperge dates from AD 927/928. The current municipality was established in 1818 through the Second Municipal Edict of Bavaria. As part of the territorial reform in Bavaria, the municipalities of Eiting and Maisenberg (both from the district of Mühldorf am Inn) were incorporated into the municipality in 1972.
The Roman-Cahtolic
parish church Sankt Andreas [left, no. 0000: left]
was built in the mid-15th century in place of an older church in the late Gothic style. The tower at the
western end of the church was created in 1506.The sacristy was added in 1723/1724.
