Câmpulung Moldovenesc is situated at an elevation of 600 m on the Moldova river in the mountain area of the Bukovinian Subcarpathians known as Obcinele Bucovinei, on the banks of the Moldova River, about 56 km west-southwest of the county seat Suceava. The municipality has a population of about 15,600 (2021).
The first written mention of the place dates from 1411 and is found in a written document that refers to Ocolul
Câmpulung, an autonomous region of northern Moldavia that had its own rules and leaders. This region
consisted of 15 villages. During the late Middle Ages, the town operated under Magdeburg
Law. Together with the rest of Bukovina, the area was under the rule of the Habsburg monarchy (later Austria-Hungary)
from 1775 until 1918. Câmpulung was in the Austrian part of the empire after the compromise of 1867, head of the
district with the same name. After the end of World War I in 1918, the town became part of the Kingdom of Romania.
Following the administrative reforms implemented by the communist regime in 1950, the city became part of Suceava Region,
while in 1968 it became part of Suceava County.
The
Rarău (1,651 m) [background] is the highest peak of the
Rarău Massif, a subgroup of the Moldo-Transylvanian Carpathians. The massif is known for its many picturesque
limestone formations. The peak is easily accessible on foot on marked trails.
