Caldas de Aregos

0000 Caldas de Aregos: Curia The spa town Caldas de Aregos is situated on the left (south) bank of the Douro River, about 51 km north-northwest of the district town Viseu, about 52 km east-southeast of Porto. Caldas de Aregos is part of the municipality of Resende.

In 1102, two lands "near the warm waters, next to the Douro, at the foot of Mount Gerôncio" were donated to the monastery of Pendorada. In the 12th century, Queen Mafalda is said to have established a hospice here for the treatment of lepers and leeches. The waters used in the spa hava natural temperature of about 60°C. However, in later times, the spa became less known because of the popularity of the nearby spa place of Caldas de Moledo. Attempts to modernise the spa began in 1910. Efficient water collection was carried out, new bathing facilities were built and a beautiful park was created around the hotel. Floods of the Douro river caused extensive damages in the 1960s. The risk of floodings was increased decidedly with the construction of the Carrapetolo dam on the Douro river, resulting in further severe damages in 1979. Reconstructions of spa facilities continued well into the 1990s.
