Albertville is situated at an elevation of 343 m in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in
Southeastern France, about 39 km east-northeast of Chambéry, the chef-lieu of the département
Savoie, and about 122 km east of Lyon, the capital of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.
Albertville is one of two subprefectures of the Savoie department. The municipality has a population of about
445,300 (2023).
The modern city of Albertville was formed in 1836 by King Carlo Alberto I of Sardinia, who merged the medieval town of Conflans, which had buildings dating to the 14th century, with the town of L'Hôpital. Since then, Albertville has fostered trade between France, Italy and Switzerland. The 1992 Winter Olympics were organised in the Savoie region, with Albertville hosting it. Some of the sports venues were later adapted for other uses, some sports venues still remain. Despite this, the town has remained more industrial than touristic.
